Dubai has just announced the launch of a project of global significance: Al Maktoum International, an airport that aims to become the largest ever built in the world.<\/strong> Located in Dubai South, it is set to handle more than 260 million passengers a year by 2032, thereby redefining the emirate\u2019s position on the global aviation scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A mega-project worth 128 billion dirhams<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Dubai government has approved a massive investment plan totalling 128 billion dirhams (approximately 35 billion dollars)<\/strong> to fund the first phase of the airport\u2019s development. This monumental project will be led by Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects<\/strong>, in collaboration with key stakeholders in civil aviation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This first phase will enable the airport to handle up to 150 million passengers, with the construction of five runways, more than 400 boarding gates, and a terminal covering more than 70 km\u00b2. Ultimately, Al Maktoum International will replace the current Dubai International (DXB)<\/strong>, now one of the busiest airports in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An airport city for a million people<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The project goes far beyond a simple airport: Al Maktoum International will be at the heart of a fully-fledged airport city<\/strong>, which forms part of the Dubai South area. It will eventually be home to more than\u2019one million residents<\/strong>, featuring housing, schools, retail areas and state-of-the-art logistics facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The idea is clear: to transform this area into a global economic hub<\/strong>, capable of attracting investors, technology companies, and professionals from the aviation and freight sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A response to population and economic growth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With a population that already exceeds 3.5 million and a stated ambition to reach 6 million by 2040<\/strong>, Dubai needed to rethink its airport infrastructure. Although DXB is performing well, it is reaching its limits. Al Maktoum International Airport is therefore set to meet growing demand in terms of connectivity, tourism and global logistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum<\/strong>, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An innovation hub for the aviation of the future<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In addition to its exceptional capabilities, Al Maktoum International aims to become a a model of sustainable and technological innovation<\/strong>. The plans include solar-powered infrastructure, smart traffic management systems, automated baggage handling areas, and connected services for passengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airport also plans to the integration of flying taxis and autonomous transport services<\/strong>, positioning Dubai as a pioneer in the aviation of the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A long-term transformation of Dubai South<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With this project, the neighbourhood of Dubai South<\/strong> is set to undergo a radical transformation. Although still sparsely populated today, the area is set to become a a true urban and economic hub<\/strong>, just like other international hubs such as Singapore Changi or Hong Kong. Hundreds of thousands of direct and indirect jobs are expected to be created in the coming years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
