As the summer holidays draw to a close, Dubai International Airport (DXB) is preparing to welcome a massive influx of travellers. With more than 3.4 million passengers expected to pass through the airport over the coming days, DXB continues to strengthen its position as leading global hub. Let’s take a closer look at how DXB manages this huge influx of visitors and the economic impacts behind this impressive growth.

Passenger flow: effective management for a seamless experience

Intensive preparations for the peak season

With an average daily traffic volume of 264,000 passengers, DXB expects to handle a peak of over 500,000 people between 31 August and 1 September. The 1 September is a particularly significant date as the most intense day, with an estimated 291,000 customers transiting through the airport.

To cope with this peak period, the airport is working closely with airlines, regulatory authorities and various service partners. This collaboration aims to ensure a smooth journey for the many passengers returning from their holidays.

Quarterly record and global impact

The first six months of the year were a successful period for DXB, with a a record 44.9 million visitors welcomed. This impressive figure represents an increase of 8% compared with the previous year, further cementing DXB’s status as a leading global gateway.

This exceptional performance is underpinned by a reliable connectivity with the main international markets. Indeed, Dubai International does not merely facilitate travel, but also plays a central role in Dubai’s economic development.

Dubai: a rapidly expanding global hub

Growth in international tourism

During the first half of 2024, Dubai attracted 9.31 million international visitors. This illustrates not only the city’s growing appeal as a global hub for talent, businesses and investors, but also its dynamism in the field of climate action.

These figures, published by the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism, are directly linked to the city’s economic growth. For example, the Dubai’s GDP has reached 115 billion dirhams in the first quarter of 2024, representing a year-on-year increase of 3.2%.

Significant contribution from foreign investment

The DMCC hub accounts for 15% of all foreign direct investment in Dubai. Furthermore, non-oil exports to the top ten trading partners in the United Arab Emirates have seen growth of 28,7%, whilst trade relations with other nations have grown by 12,6%.

This momentum, underpinned by ongoing initiatives aimed at boosting global trade and attracting further investment, leads to the optimal utilisation of available economic resources, thereby enabling Dubai to realise its global ambitions.
