On Tuesday 28 May 2024, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai unveiled an ambitious new strategic plan. This initiative aims to make 80%: everyday services just 20 minutes away walking or cycling. This initiative forms part of the Urban Plan 2040 Dubai and the Vision “We the UAE 2031” of the Emirati government.

Key objectives: the economy, well-being and sustainability

Economic development

The RTA hopes that this new strategy will boost the local economy by encouraging more people to use environmentally friendly modes of transport. By making it easier to access essential services through sustainable transport options, we expect to see an increase in the number of local shops and a reduction in traffic congestion, which will contribute to greater economic efficiency.

The well-being and happiness of residents

Beyond economic considerations, this plan also prioritises the well-being and happiness of residents and visitors. By encouraging active modes of transport such as walking and cycling, it helps to improve public health. Furthermore, fewer cars on the roads leads to a reduction in noise and air pollution, thereby creating a more pleasant urban environment.

  • Reducing traffic congestion
  • Reduction in pollution
  • Improving public health

Supporting sustainability: towards a zero-emission future

One of the cornerstones of this initiative is the accelerated transition towards zero-emission modes of transport. The RTA intends not only to introduce electric vehicles but also to promote alternative solutions such as cycling and pedestrian infrastructure. The aim is twofold: to reduce the carbon footprint and to promote an environmentally friendly city.

Practical initiatives for a sustainable future

With this in mind, a number of initiatives will be launched, such as:

  • Implementation of safe cycle paths
  • Deployment of charging points for electric bikes
  • Consultation with local businesses to encourage the use of environmentally friendly modes of transport

Safety and innovation: the keys to success

Promoting road safety

Another crucial aspect of this plan is the promotion of safety/user safety. The RTA will invest in cutting-edge technologies to monitor and ensure safety on roads and other traffic routes. This includes the introduction of smart signage and the upgrading of existing infrastructure to minimise accidents.

Innovation for the benefit of users

To meet citizens’ specific needs and anticipate future trends, the RTA plans to develop innovative services. These new services will be based on in-depth market research and will incorporate advanced technological features to improve user experience.

Long-term vision: in line with the royal directives

This strategic plan is based on the guidelines set out by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The ultimate aim is to transform Dubai into a city where harmony between the urban and natural environments is perfectly balanced, whilst meeting to growing needs its cosmopolitan population.

A vibrant and versatile city

Dubai aims to become a metropolis whose infrastructure enables everyone to access everyday services quickly and easily. This includes a thoughtful urban planning, incorporating green spaces, shopping centres, schools and business premises, all interconnected via environmentally friendly modes of transport.

Adaptability and anticipating the future

By diversifying and modernising its transport services, Dubai aims not only to meet current needs but also to prepare for future challenges. The city is focusing on continuous innovation and the regular assessment of infrastructure to remain at the cutting edge and maintain its status as a global model for urban development.

A turning point for Dubai

With this new strategic plan, the Dubai RTA is clearly demonstrating its commitment to sustainable and inclusive urban development. By prioritising the economy, citizens’ wellbeing, safety and innovation, it is positioning itself as a leader in the transformation of urban mobility for decades to come.

Ultimately, these initiatives aim not only to improve the current quality of life for Dubai’s residents and visitors, but also to lay the foundations for a future in which mobility and sustainability go hand in hand.
