The vehicle travels on visual markings on the ground and follows a pre-set route using on-board sensors and cameras. It can be electrically powered, operate in standalone mode or be remotely controlled by an operator according to the network’s requirements.
This type of tram has several advantages:
- Reducing infrastructure costs, as no railway tracks are required; ;
- Flexibility of installation, making it possible to adapt routes in line with urban development; ;

To support the roll-out of this new mode of transport, the RTA also plans to create “smart” stations” fitted with sensors, real-time information screens and contactless ticketing systems.
Passengers will be able to use it to track the tram’s location, arrival times, seat availability and even top up their Nol card directly on site. These stations will be designed in a integrated transport approach, linked to the metro and bus routes and existing cycle paths.
The user experience will be entirely digital: mobile payments, smartphone notifications, multimodal journeys and multilingual voice assistance will become part of travellers’ daily lives.
Another step towards a car-free city
The launch of the trackless tram is part of the Dubai’s sustainable mobility strategy, the aim of which is to reduce the reliance on private vehicles and to increase the share of public transport to 30 % by 2030.
This project complements an already rich ecosystem comprising the Dubai Metro, the Dubai Tram, the electric buses, the autonomous taxis and even the urban aircraft currently in the testing phase. Taken together, these initiatives reflect Dubai’s commitment to being the world’s first city to combine smart mobility and environmental sustainability.
The RTA also plans to to collect and analyse data based on the results of these trials to adjust tram routes, frequency and capacity in line with actual demand. This data-driven approach will enable maximise network efficiency whilst reducing operating costs.

If the tests prove successful, Dubai could become the the first city in the Gulf to roll out a trackless tram system on a large scale, paving the way for a new generation of urban transport for the other GCC countries.
This development would further strengthen the the United Arab Emirates’ position as a regional leader in mobility innovation.
