Dubai is once again set to host one of the the world’s biggest New Year’s Eve shows. To mark the New Year, the emirate will be rolling out an exceptional programme featuring 48 fireworks displays spread across more than 40 venues, cementing its reputation as the world capital of New Year’s Eve celebrations. From fireworks displays and street entertainment to heightened security measures, here’s everything you need to know to make the most of the evening.
A spectacular show taking place throughout the city
As is the case every year, the centrepiece of the festivities will remain the Burj Khalifa, where a show combining fireworks, lasers and synchronised light displays will attract hundreds of thousands of spectators. But the event isn’t confined to Downtown.
Shows are also planned at iconic venues such as Palm Jumeirah, Global Village, Dubai Festival City, Bluewaters, JBR and several residential and seaside areas.
This spread of events allows us to offer an immersive experience across the whole city and prevents crowds from becoming overly concentrated in any one location. Whether you’re a resident or a visitor, you’ll be able to enjoy New Year’s Eve without necessarily having to go to the city centre.
Road closures to be expected
In order to ensure that journeys are safe and run smoothly, the authorities have announced several major road closures, to plan carefully before going out.
The first closures will begin as early as 4.00 pm, with restricted access to Al Asayel Street, Burj Khalifa Street and Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard.
From 8.00 pm, Al Sukook Street will also be closed.
À 9.00 pm, Upper Financial Centre Street will be closed to traffic.
Finally, as soon as 11 pm, a strategic section of Sheikh Zayed Road, between Al Maidan Street and Commercial Centre Street, will be completely closed to traffic.
These measures will remain in place until the crowd has dispersed after midnight. It is therefore strongly advised that you plan your journeys in advance.
Public transport is strongly recommended
For New Year’s Eve, the authorities recommend that you prioritise public transport, including the metro, buses and official taxis. The Dubai Metro will operate with extended opening hours and increased frequency to cope with the massive influx of passengers.
Parking around the city centre and entertainment districts will be limited or subject to restrictions. It is essential to arrive early to avoid traffic jams and long waits.
Practical tips for a stress-free evening
To make the most of New Year’s Eve in Dubai, there are a few simple rules to follow.
Arriving several hours in advance ensures you get a good spot and avoids any unexpected closures. It is also advisable to check alternative routes before setting off and to use real-time navigation apps.
Families with children should bring water, snacks and suitable clothing, as queues can be long in some busy areas. Finally, it is essential to follow safety guidelines and the instructions of the authorities to ensure a peaceful evening.
