The city of Dubai is set to launch a revolutionary infrastructure project that promises to transform the way we think about motorways. Called «Dubai Green Spine», this ambitious project aims to create the world’s greenest road, in line with the Urban Master Plan 2040 from Dubai. Thanks to the use of’renewable energy and by incorporating innovative green spaces, this motorway should not only promote a sustainable way of life but also improve the quality of life for its residents.

Dubai Green Spine, an infrastructure powered by renewable energy

At the heart of the Dubai Green Spine project lies a bold environmental ambition : to build an infrastructure powered entirely by renewable energy sources. This initiative will be primarily powered by:

  • Some solar panels installed along the railway lines.
  • Some green roofs on the surrounding buildings.
  • Some vertical farms enabling the cultivation of local food.

With these green technologies, Dubai plans to to minimise one’s carbon footprint whilst ensuring the long-term sustainability of this new urban infrastructure.

Urban farms and vertical gardens

Growing your own food

One of the most fascinating aspects of the Dubai Green Spine is the integration of urban farms and vertical gardens along the motorway. These spaces allow residents to grow their own food, thereby promoting local and sustainable food production. Crops will be able to thrive thanks to an optimised irrigation system that is integrated into the project.

Multifunctional and educational spaces

These farms and gardens are not solely intended for food production. They will also play a key role in environmental education. School and educational visits will be organised on a regular basis, raising awareness amongst children and adults of the importance of urban agriculture and sustainable practices.

Mixed-use commercial and leisure facilities

The Dubai Green Spine will not be limited to being a mere green expressway. It will also include various retail and leisure spaces designed to offer residents and visitors an enhanced and integrated experience. These facilities include:

Multi-purpose areas and shops

A variety of retail areas featuring shops, restaurants and leisure spaces will encourage community interaction. These facilities will also sell fresh produce from local farms, thereby strengthening the circular economy.

Parks and walking trails

Some lush parks and footpaths run alongside the motorway, creating ideal spots for outdoor activities such as jogging, walking and cycling. This encourages an active lifestyle and reduces the use of motor vehicles.

A project in line with the Dubai Urban Master Plan 2040

The development of the Dubai Green Spine is closely aligned with the objectives set by the Dubai’s 2040 Urban Master Plan. This plan aims to turn Dubai into a smart and sustainable city, where technology and nature coexist harmoniously for the well-being of its inhabitants.

Reducing the carbon footprint

By promoting the non-motorised transport and using only renewable energy sources, this project will make a significant contribution to the reduction in the carbon footprint in the city. The planned opening could benefit nearly eight million residents.

Social integration

The Dubai Green Spine is not just a piece of infrastructure; it is an invitation to a lifestyle change. By growing their own food and taking part in environmental initiatives, residents will play an active part in protecting the environment.

The project Dubai Green Spine marks a crucial step towards a sustainable and smart urban future. With its infrastructure powered by renewable energy, its urban farms and its leisure facilities, it represents a a model for future green cities. By combining technology and environmental protection, Dubai is leading the way towards a more balanced coexistence between urbanisation and respect for the environment.
