The United Arab Emirates is renowned for its modern infrastructure and rapid adaptation to innovations. To remain at the forefront of road safety, the government recently issued a new federal decree-law concerning traffic regulation. It covers everything from minimum licensing ages to a full range of fines and penalties. Let's find out how these new standards may affect the lives of drivers in the USA.
Minimum ages for obtaining a driver's license
The new decree specifies the ages required to obtain different types of driver's license:
- Motorcycles: from age 17
- Cars and light vehicles: from 18 years of age
- Heavy vehicles: from age 20
These categories are designed to ensure that drivers have acquired a certain maturity and responsibility before getting behind the wheel of different types of vehicle. This is crucial to guaranteeing safety on the roads, depending on the type and power of the vehicle being driven.
Tougher fines and penalties
With the increasing number of vehicles on the road and ever-changing driving habits, strict regulations are essential to ensure safety. The decree stipulates new fines and penalties for various offences:
Inappropriate use of license plates
Incorrect or fraudulent use of license plates can result in imprisonment and/or a minimum fine of 20,000 dirhams. This rule is designed to prevent any attempt to conceal the identity of the vehicle, which could complicate police investigations.
Driving under the influence
Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is severely punished:
- Under the influence of alcohol: imprisonment and/or fine of between 20,000 and 100,000 dirhams
- Under the influence of narcotics: imprisonment and/or fine of between 30,000 and 200,000 dirhams
This demonstrates the authorities' strict determination to eliminate these dangerous behaviours and reduce accidents caused by driving-impairing substances.
Suspended permits
Driving with a suspended license is also punishable by up to three months' imprisonment and/or a fine of at least 10,000 dirhams. This encourages drivers to regularize their situation before taking to the road again.
Hit and run after an accident
Failing to report an accident or fleeing the scene is incredibly serious, and carries up to a year's imprisonment and/or a fine of between 50,000 and 100,000 dirhams. This provision encourages drivers involved in accidents to assume their civil and criminal responsibilities.
Negligence causing death
Causing death by careless driving can lead to imprisonment and/or a fine of at least 50,000 dirhams. This penalty underlines the importance of careful driving and, hopefully, reduces the number of deaths caused by avoidable errors.
Objectives of the new decree
In issuing this decree, the UAE government is primarily seeking to :
- Improving road safety
- Reduce fatal and serious accidents
- Raising awareness of the dangers of reckless driving
These measures demonstrate a proactive approach to road risk prevention and the harmonization of rules with international standards.
Adopting and complying with these new regulations will enable drivers not only to avoid heavy penalties, but also to contribute to a safer environment for all. Every offence punishable by law is aimed at correcting behaviour that endangers human lives and disrupts public order. This update to the Highway Code thus represents a significant step towards safer roads in the United Arab Emirates.
