A new technological era is on the horizon

The United Arab Emirates is taking a decisive step towards the future of telecommunications by officially launching its 6G initiative, led by the TDRA (Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority). With the creation of the 6G Committee, the country clearly states its ambition: to become a global leader in the connectivity of the future, having already been among the first in the world to roll out 5G on a large scale.

This committee brings together the country’s leading telecoms operators, strategic research centres, leading universities and public bodies specialising in innovation. Together, they will work to define the standards, infrastructure, applications and roll-out strategy for 6G over the next decade.

This launch marks the start of a far-reaching transformation: that of a society in which hyper-connectivity will become the norm and in which disruptive technologies will become a natural part of everyday life.

A country that is already at the forefront of 5G

The Emirates are already among the world’s leaders thanks to a 99.5 % 5G coverage across the whole country. This achievement places the country amongst the nations best prepared to welcome the next generation, the first global roll-outs of which are expected around 2030.

6G promises a speed multiplied by 100, with latency reduced to a few microseconds and unprecedented network capacity. It will enable billions of devices to be connected simultaneously, making possible what is known as the’Internet of the Senses, where digital experiences blend with physical sensations thanks to immersive technologies.

For the Emirates, the aim is not only to stay ahead of the curve, but also to anticipate the future needs of key sectors: aviation, healthcare, autonomous mobility, augmented education, cybersecurity and Industry 4.0.

Artificial intelligence, quantum computing and satellites at the heart of the project

The 6G initiative is not merely a technological development. The TDRA aims to build a holistic infrastructure based on three key pillars:

1. Artificial intelligence

6G will be designed to work with a Native AI. The network will be able to continuously optimise itself, adjust data flows, predict congestion, detect cyber threats and automatically allocate capacity according to usage.

2. Quantum technologies

Quantum communications will make it possible to achieve levels of unrivalled safety, making it impossible to intercept any data. The Emirates are already investing in programmes relating to quantum cryptography and next-generation processors.

3. Next-generation satellites

6G will incorporate satellite constellations capable of providing complete service continuity, even in remote, maritime or desert areas. This approach reinforces the country’s vision: a unlimited connectivity.

By combining these three areas, the Emirates aim to build a society in which technology becomes invisible, seamless and integrated.

Practical applications of 6G in the Emirates

6G will pave the way for major innovations across all sectors. Projects already mentioned by the authorities include:

  • fully autonomous mobility, with fleets of vehicles, drones and lorries operated entirely by AI,
  • augmented telesurgery, enabling ultra-high-precision remote operations,
  • the country’s digital twins, capable of simulating roads, networks, hospitals or entire cities in order to anticipate needs and prevent crises,
  • national metaverses dedicated to education, tourism, training or public services,
  • real-time monitoring of the environment, thanks to billions of connected sensors monitoring the quality of the air, water and buildings.

With 6G, the current limitations of networks will disappear. Everything will become instantaneous, intelligent and synchronised.

A clear strategy to consolidate regional leadership

The Emirates make no secret of their ambition to become the the technological hub of the Middle East, with Abu Dhabi and Dubai driving this transformation.

The establishment of the 6G Committee marks a number of commitments:

  • to develop Emirati 6G standards in collaboration with international organisations,
  • to drive forward academic research into quantum technologies and AI,
  • to attract global companies in the sector,
  • and test the first pilot schemes from 2028.

This strategy will strengthen the country’s position as a hub for innovation, whilst offering residents and businesses unrivalled connectivity.

Conclusion: The Emirates are paving the way for the society of the future

With the official launch of the 6G initiative, the United Arab Emirates is once again demonstrating its ability to anticipate technological revolutions and prepare for them before anyone else.

The country has already established itself as a leader in 5G. It now aims to build a comprehensive 6G ecosystem, drawing on AI, quantum technology and satellites, to create a society where everything is connected, secure and smart.

This vision is not merely technical; it is deeply strategic. It aims to make the Emirates a country where innovation becomes the driving force behind quality of life, economic competitiveness and overall progress.
