Improving traffic flow and reducing journey times are key priorities for any major modern city. In Dubai, these objectives are being realised through ambitious road infrastructure initiatives. Among the flagship projects led by the’Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), we find the development of the Al Khail Road. This innovative project has not only transformed several of the city’s strategic thoroughfares, but has also changed the way residents get about on a daily basis. Let’s find out together how this project has redefined the driving experience in Dubai.

The main points of the development project

The Al Khail Road development project is regarded as a major strategic initiative launched by the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority. Aimed at improving the parallel and feeder roads serving major motorways such as Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, the main objective of this project was to ease traffic congestion in various key neighbourhoods of the town.

This project was carried out in several phases, each focusing on specific junctions and sections of the road. Several bridges were built and numerous improvements were made to the surface roads in order to increase their capacity. This work culminated in a significant increase in overall traffic capacity, thereby facilitating a smoother and safer traffic flow.

The areas affected by the project

Zabeel

One of the key elements of the project involved the construction of a a 700-metre three-lane bridge linking Oud Metha Street and Financial Centre Street. With a capacity of up to 4,800 vehicles per hour, this bridge efficiently connects traffic coming from Meydan Street to Al Khail Road towards Deira. In addition, improvements have been made to approximately 1,550 metres of surface roads to divert traffic from Al Khail Road towards Ras Al Khor Street, thereby significantly improving traffic flow in this critical area.

Al Quoz 1

In order to strengthen the links between the city’s various thoroughfares, a a 650-metre-long two-lane bridge was built between Al Meydan Road and Al Waha Street. This junction connects traffic from Meydan Street to Al Khail Road in the direction of Jebel Ali. The works also included the upgrading of 2,170 metres of surface roads to improve the link between Al Khail Road and Latifa Bint Hamdan Street, making this area much less congested than before.

Ghadeer Al Tair

Here, the construction of a a 640-metre-long two-lane bridge With a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour, it has improved traffic flow between Al Meydan Road and Latifa Bint Hamdan Street. This improvement plays a crucial role in reducing traffic congestion in an area that is often busy.

Jumeirah Village Circle

In Jumeirah Village Circle, a a similar 700-metre-long, two-lane bridge was built to link Hessa Street with Al Khamila Street. With a capacity of up to 3,200 vehicles per hour, this part of the project ensures that traffic from Al Khail Road can reach Hessa Street without any major complications, thereby improving access to this vibrant residential neighbourhood.

Al Jaddaf

For Al Jaddaf, the addition of a new 600-metre-long lane on Al Khail Road contributed directly to improve traffic flow to Deira. Between the junctions of Oud Metha Street and Financial Centre Street, this expansion now allows around 2,000 additional vehicles per hour to pass through, significantly reducing the usual delays on this busy route.

Business Bay

Recently, widening works have been carried out in Business Bay, where a an additional 435-metre track has been added to ensure a smoother flow of traffic between Al Khail Road and the entrance to Business Bay. This change not only meets current traffic needs but also improves road safety in this rapidly growing commercial area.

Overall benefits of the project

  • Increasing road capacity: Taken together, these measures will create an additional capacity of nearly 19,600 vehicles per hour, significantly easing the pressure on the main roads.
  • Reducing traffic congestion: Thanks to the new infrastructure, the time spent in traffic jams is reduced, offering road users a more pleasant and efficient driving experience.
  • Improved safety: With better-designed lanes and dedicated bridges, the likelihood of accidents is reduced, ensuring greater safety for all drivers.
  • Ease of access: New links between different neighbourhoods make daily journeys easier and improve access to essential services and urban amenities.

Completion of the Al Khail Road development project represents a major step towards a future in which mobility and modernity go hand in hand in Dubai. Each of these changes not only improves traffic flow, but also helps shape a city that is better prepared to accommodate a growing population and meet the ever-changing needs of its citizens. As the streets come to life once more, these innovations promise to offer residents and visitors a an unprecedented urban experience.
