The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in partnership with e& (formerly Etisalat Group), has recently completed the installation of Wi-Fi in 43 stations public transport. A strategic initiative that forms part of the overall vision of a a smart, connected city focused on the user experience.

More connected and inclusive mobility

Thanks to this infrastructure, users can now stay connected whilst waiting for their bus or ferry, whether it’s to check their itineraries, work remotely, watch online content or simply stay in touch. This free service is available round the clock and requires only a simple authentication via smartphone, making access fast, smooth and universal.

This initiative also aims to bridge the digital divide, by ensuring that everyone, regardless of their age or economic status, has access to the internet in public transport areas.

An initiative in line with the Smart Dubai vision

The provision of free Wi-Fi at transport stations is not merely a technological convenience: it fully reflects Dubai’s strategy to become a global leader in smart cities. This project forms part of a wider series of measures aimed at:

  • Digitising public services,
  • Optimising the user experience,
  • Reducing reliance on private cars by making public transport more attractive.

Dubai is thus reinforcing its image as a futuristic metropolis where technology, innovation and quality of life go hand in hand.

A way to improve the customer experience

This new service also helps to to improve the level of satisfaction amongst public transport users. Waiting for a bus or a ferry is no longer a waste of time, but can become a productive or enjoyable experience. By enabling travellers to work, browse the internet or check their travel apps, Dubai is redefining the standards of urban comfort.

This focus on the user experience lies at the heart of the RTA’s strategy, which is driving forward a range of innovations to to make the public transport network more modern, accessible and connected.

A regional and global benchmark

Dubai is thus positioning itself as a model for the integration of technology into urban services. Whilst many cities around the world are struggling to provide seamless, free connectivity in public spaces, the emirate is leading the way by fully integrating connectivity into its transport system.

This pilot project could well inspire other major cities to follow suit, by prioritising the digital connectivity at the heart of urban mobility.

Conclusion

With the roll-out of free Wi-Fi at all its bus stops and ferry terminals, Dubai reaffirms its status as a smart, forward-looking city. This initiative improves both digital accessibility, user comfort and the appeal of public transport, whilst reinforcing the emirate’s image as one of the world’s most advanced technology hubs.
