Dubai has taken a major step forward in its smart mobility strategy with the official launch of the Blue Line on the Underground, a major project estimated to cost AED 20.5 billion (US$5.6 billion). Designed to improve connectivity between residential areas and key economic hubs, this new line embodies Dubai’s ambition to position itself as one of the most modern and efficiently run cities in the world.

A 30-kilometre strategic line with 14 stations

The Blue Line will run from 30 kilometres and will include 14 stations, incorporating key areas of the city, including rapidly developing residential neighbourhoods and strategic economic hubs. The aim is to significantly reduce daily journey times for thousands of residents and workers, whilst easing road congestion.

The line will also provide a connection to the existing red and green lines, thereby ensuring a smoother travel between the different districts of Dubai and improving the efficiency of the overall public transport network.

Delivery is scheduled for 2029

The project, which has already been launched by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), is expected to be finalised by 2029. The Blue Line is part of a long-term vision that supports the population and economic growth of the emirate, which is expected to have a population of over 7.8 million by 2040.

The flagship station, named Emaar Properties Station, will become the highest metro station in the world, standing 74 metres tall, with a capacity of up to 160,000 passengers a day.

Funding provided by Emirates NBD and its partners

This colossal project is financially supported by Emirates NBD and a consortium of financial partners, demonstrating the institutions’ confidence in the emirate’s economic strength. The private sector’s involvement also reflects the Dubai’s commitment to building modern infrastructure through effective public-private partnerships.

More sustainable and smart mobility

As well as improving connectivity, the Blue Line Metro helps to Dubai’s environmental targets by encouraging the use of public transport and reducing reliance on private cars. The new trains will incorporate state-of-the-art technology to to optimise energy consumption, improve passenger comfort and enhance safety.

This initiative forms part of the Dubai 2040 Vision, which aims to make the emirate a global benchmark for sustainable and smart cities.

Conclusion

With an investment of AED 20.5 billion and with commissioning scheduled for 2029, the Blue Line Metro marks a new era for urban transport in Dubai. By effectively linking residential neighbourhoods and business hubs, this project strengthens the city’s appeal, improves residents’ quality of life and contributes to environmental sustainability. Dubai thus reaffirms its role as a pioneer in the urban mobility of the future.
