Dubai continues its spectacular expansion with the introduction of new infrastructure. The most recent of these include two major bridges opened by the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). These new structures promise not only to improve traffic flow, but also to significantly reduce journey times in this bustling metropolis.
New Bridges in Zaa’beel and Al Quoz 1
Zaa’beel Bridge
The 700-metre-long Zaa’beel Bridge links Zaa’beel Palace Road and Oud Metha Road to Al Khail Road towards Jebel Ali. With an impressive capacity of 4,800 vehicles per hour, it is designed to improve the flow of transport in this strategic sector.
Al Quoz 1 Bridge
This other road, which is 650 metres long and has two lanes, connects Al Meydan Street to Al Khail Road in the direction of Jebel Ali. It can accommodate up to 3,200 vehicles per hour, thereby significantly improving traffic flow in this area.
Development sites along Al Khail Road
Al Jaddaf
In Al Jaddaf, a new lane will increase the capacity of the road to Deira by 2,000 vehicles per hour. Surface works are being carried out over a distance of 850 metres to link the roads between Al Khail Road and Financial Centre Street.
Meydan
A new 610-metre bridge will link Al Meydan Street with Ras Al Khor Street, adding two further lanes and increasing capacity by 3,200 vehicles per hour. At the same time, road surface improvements over a distance of 1,550 metres will further improve the flow of traffic.
Ghadir Al Tair
In this section, a 640-metre bridge connects the junctions of Latifa Bint Hamdan Street and Al Meydan Street, with a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour. Further roadworks are planned over a distance of 1,350 metres to improve traffic flow.
Future Projects and Extensions
The authority has also planned future projects in various areas, including:
- Jumeirah Village Circle: A 700-metre, two-lane bridge will be built to link Hessa Street to Al Khail Road towards Deira.
- Adding tracks: In Al Jaddaf, a new 600-metre-long lane will increase capacity by 2,000 vehicles per hour.
- Increase in the number of bridges: Three new bridges will open by the end of October to ease traffic flow to Deira.
Strategic Objectives and Impact
Traffic relief
These infrastructure projects aim to create parallel and supporting road corridors for Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road. The development of Al Khail Road is key to to ease congestion on these main routes.
Opening of key areas
With five lanes in each direction, and in some places up to six, Al Khail Road plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth flow of traffic. Thanks to the new infrastructure, the capacity of existing junctions is increasing by 19,600 vehicles per hour.
