What is Emirates Airlines?

You’ve no doubt already heard of’Emirates Airlines, isn't it? This luxury airline, born in Dubai in 1985, has become a true giant of the skies. But why has it been so successful? It’s simple: Emirates is much more than just an airline. It embodies the dream of a Dubai that is open to the world.

Indeed, right from the start, Emirates had a clear mission: to connect the different continents. Mission accomplished! Today, it serves more than 150 destinations thanks to an impressive fleet of’Airbus A380 and Boeing 777.

A company unlike any other

Dubai didn’t want an airline «like any other». No, Emirates was meant to embody something greater, something bolder. And it worked! Today, the airline has become a global showcase for the United Arab Emirates.

So, what makes the difference? Here are a few factors that put Emirates at the top of the list:

  • Its unrivalled comfort  : spacious seats, lounges, and even in-flight showers. Yes, you read that right – showers!
  • Its exceptional customer service  : every passenger feels pampered, whether they’re travelling in economy or first class.
  • His unrivalled entertainment  : thanks to the famous ICE system, it’s literally impossible to get bored on a flight.

As you’ll have gathered, Emirates doesn’t just carry passengers; it turns every flight into a unique experience. That’s the magic of Emirates.

Who owns Emirates?

Are you wondering who’s behind this an exceptional airline ? Well, the answer is simple: Emirates is owned by Dubai government. More specifically, it forms part of the Emirates Group, a colossal conglomerate overseen by the’Dubai Investment Authority (Investment Corporation of Dubai). But hang on, that’s not all!

In fact, at the helm of this company is Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, a man without whom Emirates’ success would undoubtedly never have been possible. Since 1985, this influential member of the Dubai’s royal family leads the company with a clear and precise vision, as well as a well-oiled strategy. That is why Emirates continues to grow; everything is managed with rigour and ambition.

Sound funding, but without dependency

Contrary to what some might think, Emirates does not rely on public subsidies. In 1985, the government injected a initial funding of 10 million dollars, and since then, the company has been operating as an independent business. Yes, you read that right: no easy money, just exemplary management.

A showcase for Dubai

It is not just a question of aeroplanes or profits. Emirates plays a key role in Dubai’s economic strategy. It attracts travellers, boosts tourism and enhances the city’s image, which could now be described as a key global hub. It is therefore fair to say that Emirates and Dubai go hand in hand. And frankly, given the results, who could argue otherwise?

In short, Emirates is an ambitious airline, backed by strong and visionary leadership. No wonder it has become a global benchmark. ?

Why was Emirates Airlines founded?

Have you ever wondered why Emirates was founded? Well, it all began in the 1980s, at a time when Dubai had big dreams. At the time, the United Arab Emirates relied mainly on Gulf Air to serve their main international destinations.

But the thing is, unfortunately, Gulf Air was not always in line with Dubai’s ambitions. The result? A decisive decision: to create a local airline which would put the city at the centre of the world. And guess what? It worked!

A clear ambition right from the start

In 1985, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, a visionary and staunch advocate of Dubai’s development, entrusted Maurice Flanagan an almost impossible task: launch an airline in just five months. And yet, thanks to that initial budget of 10 million dollars, two leased aircraft and unwavering determination, Emirates Airlines still managed to take off.

The objectives were clear:

  • To offer an alternative to Gulf Air, whilst remaining independent.
  • To promote Dubai’s image as a modern and welcoming hub.
  • Effectively linking Europe, Asia and Africa.

The gamble on independence

Unlike other airlines in the region, Emirates did not want ongoing subsidies or preferential treatment. However, Dubai’s open-skies policy played a key role: no protection of airspace, just healthy competition. That’s right – success had to come from service and management, not from privileges!

A springboard for Dubai

Setting up Emirates wasn’t just about getting aeroplanes into the air; above all, it was about building a strategic tool to transform Dubai into a a must-visit global destination. Thanks to Emirates, tourists and investors are now flocking to the city, and Dubai has established itself as a vibrant metropolis.

What does “Emirates” mean?

Have you ever wondered what the word means? Emirates ? Well, you should know that it’s not just a name that sounds nice. In fact, the word «Emirates» refers directly to the United Arab Emirates, a federation comprising seven emirates, including Dubai. As you can see, every detail counts at Emirates. ?

The word «Emirates» also evokes the country’s history and political structure. Indeed, each emirate has its own ruler, or «emir», hence the term Emirates. By giving the company this name, the management sought to celebrate this heritage whilst setting out their ambitious vision of a a future with an international focus.

That is why this name works so well. «Emirates» is simple, powerful and universal. It resonates just as much with travellers from all corners of the globe as it does with citizens of the Emirates. It is not just a brand; it is an experience.

Emirates’ location

Where is Emirates Airlines based?

If you’ve ever flown with Emirates Airlines, you’re no doubt familiar with its hub: the impressive Dubai International Airport (DXB). That’s right, this is where it all happens! This airport, situated in the heart of Dubai, is much more than just a transit hub. In fact, it is a global crossroads where different cultures and travellers come together.

In fact, it is his three state-of-the-art terminals which make DBX one of the busiest airports in the world. The Terminal 3, dedicated exclusively to Emirates, is a marvel of technology and design.

To put it simply, imagine a space capable of welcoming millions of passengers every year, whilst offering access to luxurious lounges, world-class restaurants and even shops on a par with those in the world’s leading capital cities. And believe us, it almost feels like staying in a 5-star hotel.

What is Emirates’ slogan?

You’ve no doubt already seen or heard Emirates’ famous slogan: “Fly Better”. The fact that it is short, punchy and ambitious means it perfectly captures the essence of the company. However, this slogan is not just a nice turn of phrase, It is a promise made to every passenger.

But what does «Fly Better» actually mean?

“Fly Better”, or “Fly better” in French, reflects Emirates’ core objective of offering a travel experience that leaves the competition in the dust, at every level. And this isn’t limited to impeccable in-flight service alone. It all begins as soon as you arrive at the airport: a smooth check-in process, luxurious lounges and a well-organised boarding process.

On board, every detail is designed with your comfort in mind, whether you’re travelling in First Class, Business Class or even Economy Class.

The evolution of the slogan

However, “Fly Better” has not always been Emirates’ slogan. Before that, the airline used “Keep Discovering”, basically, an encouragement to explore the world.

Even earlier, it was presented under the motto “Be Good to Yourself”. This highlighted the importance they attached to passenger comfort.
