The United Arab Emirates has taken another major step forward in the modernisation of its monetary system with the introduction of a new symbol for the dirham and the imminent launch of the Digital Dirham, their own central bank digital currency.

A new symbol for the dirham: modernity and stability

The Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates (CBUAE) has unveiled a new symbol for the dirham, inspired by the letter «D» and featuring two horizontal lines. These lines symbolise financial stability, reflecting the country’s commitment to a robust economy. This symbol aims to strengthen the dirham’s identity on international markets, making it more recognisable and affirming the UAE’s position as a global financial centre.

The Digital Dirham: a revolution in payments

At the same time, the CBUAE plans to launch the Digital Dirham by the end of 2025. This digital currency, built on blockchain technology, will enable fast, secure and cost-effective transactions. It will be integrated into everyday transactions via a secure platform featuring a digital wallet accessible to all.

The Digital Dirham will feature a circular design in the colours of the UAE flag, symbolising innovation and national pride. It will be accepted as a means of payment across all payment channels, alongside physical currency, thereby facilitating a smooth transition to a digital economy.

Strategic objectives and expected benefits

The launch of the Digital Dirham forms part of the UAE’s strategy aimed at:

  • Modernising the financial infrastructure by adopting cutting-edge technologies.
  • Improving the efficiency and security of financial transactions.
  • Strengthening financial inclusion by providing easier access to banking services.
  • Positioning the Emirates as a leader in technological innovation on the world stage.

By incorporating features such as smart contracts and tokenisation, the Digital Dirham will also enable the development of new financial products and services, whilst reducing costs and increasing access to international markets.

Towards an inclusive and secure digital economy

Through these initiatives, the United Arab Emirates is demonstrating its commitment to remaining at the forefront of financial innovation. The new dirham symbol and the launch of the Digital Dirham represent key steps towards a more digital, inclusive and secure economy, in line with global technological developments.

By implementing these changes, the Emirates are strengthening their position as an international financial hub and preparing their economy for the challenges and opportunities of the digital future.
