On the 1ster In July 2024, a photograph shared by the Abu Dhabi Media Office highlighted the’OceanXplorer, «the most advanced research vessel ever built», according to the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD). This mission to 20 days made it possible to to map the seabed around the United Arab Emirates. In collaboration with M42 Healthcare, Bayanat and OceanX, the aim of this expedition was to study the the impacts of climate change in UAE waters.
The main objectives of the expedition
Seabed mapping and geological analysis
One of the highlights of this mission was the detailed mapping of active submarine fault systems. This information is crucial for:
- Identify and understand certain types of cracks in the Earth’s crust
- Predicting areas prone to earthquakes
- Understanding the movement of groundwater
Biological and environmental studies
Scientists have also carried out extensive research into various biological and environmental aspects, such as:
- An analysis of the’Environmental DNA
- The submarine microbial communities
- The concentration of nutrients
- The health of populations in large marine species
Participation of Emirati experts
During this expedition, several Emirati scientists have contributed to groundbreaking research into deep-sea biology, geology and oceanography in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
Opinions of leading scientists
Ahmed Al Hashmi of the EAD emphasised that this in-depth knowledge of marine ecosystems could improve the ability to predict future consequences of climate change worldwide. For his part, Vincent Pieribone of OceanX expressed his pride at working with the EAD on this initiative, which combines ocean science with conservation efforts.
This expedition marks a significant milestone for marine research in the United Arab Emirates. Thanks to cutting-edge technology and interdisciplinary collaboration, the discoveries made on board the’OceanXplorer not only provide a better understanding of the local marine environment but also offer valuable tools for combating adverse effects of climate change on a global scale.
Key points to remember
- The detailed mapping of the seabed around the UAE can help predict the earthquakes.
- Some in-depth biological studies enable us to monitor the health of marine ecosystems in the face of climate change.
- The active involvement of Local scientists are building capacity in applied marine research.
- A international cooperation promotes the’innovation and the ocean conservation.
