An environmental ambition driven by innovation

In 2025, the United Arab Emirates reached a major milestone in their environmental strategy : more than 30 million mangroves have already been planted across the country. This impressive figure forms part of an even more ambitious target: 100 million mangroves by 2030, as part of the National Carbon Sequestration Project. To achieve this target, the country is relying on cutting-edge technologies, in particular the in vitro culture and the automated planting using drones, reducing transplant waiting times and optimising coverage of coastal areas.

A natural solution to the climate challenge

Mangroves are not just coastal trees: they are genuine natural carbon sinks. They absorb up to four times as much CO₂ as terrestrial tropical forests, whilst protecting coastlines from erosion, regulating marine ecosystems and promoting a unique biodiversity. By incorporating these plantations into an overall carbon sequestration strategy, the Emirates are making a direct contribution to their Net Zero 2050 commitment, a cornerstone of their long-term climate policy.

A national and regional campaign

The success of this project also depends on a multisectoral mobilisation. Local authorities, businesses, universities and environmental NGOs are working together to plant, monitor and protect new mangrove areas. Numerous awareness-raising campaigns are also being run among citizens and expatriates to embed these issues more firmly in the collective consciousness. This movement is helping to make the Emirates a regional model of environmental governance, by combining science, technology and public participation.

Strong leadership in nature-based solutions

With this large-scale marine reforestation project, the Emirates are establishing themselves as a a leading player in nature-based solutions. Through a pragmatic, technologically advanced approach that is aligned with international climate standards, the country is demonstrating that it is possible to combine economic growth, controlled urbanisation and conservation of ecosystems. A strategy that strengthens their influence on the international stage, particularly at major climate conferences.

Conclusion: a model of sustainability to follow

Planting 100 million mangroves by 2030 is not just an environmental goal: it is a a strong statement of intent. It reflects the United Arab Emirates’ commitment to pursuing a sustainable path, a model for the Gulf region and beyond. At a time when climate change is emerging as a global issue, the Emirates are reaffirming their role as visionary leader the green transitions of the 21st century.
