Work scheduled on the E12

Drivers in Abu Dhabi will have to adapt their routes this weekend due to temporary closures on the Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Road (E12). The Abu Dhabi Mobility Authority has announced a series of works that will affect traffic heading towards Saadiyat Island, one of the strategic routes linking Yas Island to the city center.

This operation is part of a maintenance and modernization program designed to improve safety and traffic flow. However, significant delays are expected, particularly in the areas near Yas Island and Saadiyat, which concentrate a large proportion of residential and tourist traffic.

Details of phase closure

The road closure will be organized in two separate stages to minimize inconvenience to motorists:

  • Phase 1: the three left-hand lanes of the E12 will be closed from Friday at 10pm until Saturday at 2pm.
  • Phase 2: the three right-hand lanes will be closed from 10pm on Saturday to 2pm on Sunday.

During these periods, traffic will be reduced to a minimum capacity, which should lead to slowdowns and queues, particularly during rush hours and when travelling to tourist areas.

Disturbances expected between Yas Island and Saadiyat

The E12 is a major route linking Yas Island, Saadiyat Island and central Abu Dhabi. The partial closure of the lanes is likely to cause traffic jams in both directions, with repercussions on journeys to residential areas, resorts and tourist attractions.

Motorists heading for Saadiyat will have to be patient, while those coming from Yas Island are advised to take alternative routes, in particular the secondary roads linking the Sheikh Khalifa Highway to other ring roads. Delays are expected to be most marked on Saturday mornings and late Sunday mornings, when traffic is at its peak.

Tips for motorists

Abu Dhabi Mobility recommends that drivers :

  • allow more time for their journeys,
  • use real-time navigation applications to avoid the most congested areas,
  • give priority to alternative routes to downtown and residential areas,
  • pay close attention to temporary signs and traffic wardens' instructions.

This closure also represents an opportunity to test the new detour routes that will gradually be integrated into the capital's overall mobility plan.

Ongoing infrastructure modernization

These works illustrate the Abu Dhabi authorities' determination to maintain a high-quality road infrastructure capable of responding to rapid urbanization and ever-increasing traffic volumes. The E12 is one of the city's strategic corridors, serving expanding residential areas, major tourist complexes such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi, and key economic hubs.

By carrying out these scheduled closures, Abu Dhabi Mobility aims to limit disruption while ensuring regular upgrading of the road network. These interventions guarantee safer, smoother traffic flow in the long term.

Conclusion: a weekend of traffic to look forward to

The partial closure of the Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Road (E12 ) this weekend is a reminder of the importance of route planning in Abu Dhabi. With scheduled closures of the left and then right lanes, motorists will need to be patient and plan alternative routes, particularly between Yas Island and Saadiyat Island.

While these disruptions represent a temporary constraint, they are part of a wider strategy to improve the capital's infrastructure. Ultimately, these works will contribute to making traffic flow more smoothly and safely, enhancing the quality of life of residents and the attractiveness of the city for visitors.
