If you're planning a trip to Dubai, you may be asking yourself the question "Can I pay in euros in Dubai?". One thing's for sure, this question comes up a lot!

Indeed, given that Dubai is a very modern city where most transactions are carried out in Emirati dirhams (AED), one quickly wonders whether one will be able to use the euro. And so it is! The euro can be used in certain places, mainly in tourist areas.

However, there are a few points that need to be explored in greater depth. So here's what we're going to talk about in this article:

  1. "Does Dubai accept euros?"
  2. "What currency is used in Dubai?"
  3. "What's the best way to pay in Dubai?"
  4. "Where to change euros in Dubai?"
  5. And "Is it necessary to have cash in Dubai?"

And to give you a quick overview, with a Visa or Mastercard bank card, you'll have no trouble spending in Dubai. However, beware of conversion fees and commission, which can quickly add to your expenses!

That's all for this introduction. If you're ready to learn more about payments in Dubai, we invite you to read on!

Does Dubai accept euros?

The short answer is no, at least not officially. However, don't go exchanging all your money just yet, as there are a few exceptions to take into account!

Are euros accepted in certain cases?

Yes, that's exactly what we wanted to talk about. Dubai's official currency is the Emirati dirham, or AED, but some tourist locations may also accept euros. This is the case, for example, of certain hotels and restaurants. Large shopping malls also accept it.

Be careful, though, as this is a rare occurrence, and the conversion rates applied will generally not be in your favor.

Why choose local currency?

The United Arab Emirates strongly encourages theuse of the dirham to maintain and improve its local economy. This means that, for most purchases, you will have to pay directly in dirhams. If you insist on using euros, you may not be able to pay in certain places, particularly outside tourist areas.

Things to remember

If you want to avoid any inconvenience, it's best to change your euros into dirhams before or as soon as you arrive in Dubai. You can also opt for a suitable bank card, which will enable you to spend directly in the local currency.

dirhams

What currency is used in Dubai?

Although we've already touched on this point, we'd like to discuss it in greater depth.

What do you need to know about the UAE dirham?

The dirham is divided into 100 fils (the equivalent of our centimes). So, there, you can own bills ranging from 5 to 1,000 AED, as well as coins of 1 AED, 50 fils or 25 fils.

To make life easier, we recommend dividing the amount in AED by 4 to obtain a rough estimate in euros. For example, a meal that would cost you 40 AED would come to more or less 10 €. It's clearer that way, isn't it?

To conclude on this point, you should know that this currency is quite stable, as the UAE's growing economy is doing well. As a result, the country insists on using the dirham for as many transactions as possible. In other words, if you're planning to go anywhere other than tourist areas, make sure you have some of this currency in your pocket.

payment methods in Dubai

What's the best way to pay in Dubai?

Now that you know that the Emirati dirham (AED) is the currency of choice, let's talk about the different means of payment available.

  1. Payment by credit card

In Dubai, credit cards are accepted almost everywhere (yes, even in some cabs). Beware, however, as not everything is rosy. In fact, most banks charge a conversion fee(around 2-3%). And sometimes even a fixed commission for each transaction! All in all, a bill that's hard to appreciate...

So, to avoid these unnecessary charges, we recommend that you opt for a bank card that's suitable for travel. For example, banks such as Revolut, N26 and Wise offer cards with reduced or non-existent fees. Thanks to these cards, you can pay directly in dirhams at the real exchange rate, without any surcharge.

  1. Cash payments

Although cards dominate in Dubai, having a little cash in your wallet can save the day.

For cash withdrawals, use the ATMs of major local banks, such as Emirates NBD or Dubai Islamic Bank. And don't forget to check whether your bank card offers free or reduced-fee withdrawals!

  1. Mobile payments

In Dubai, mobile payments are gaining ground, especially in more modern locations. As a result, Apple Pay, Google Pay and other contactless solutions are widely accepted. These payment methods are disconcertingly simple, and are even more interesting when linked to a no-fee card.

Where to change euros in Dubai

Now that you're familiar with the various means of payment, the question is: "Where and how can I convert my euros into dirhams without losing a small fortune?".

  1. At an airport

Changing your euros at the airport may seem logical, especially if you want dirhams as soon as you arrive. But beware: the exchange offices located in the terminals often charge very low exchange rates, as well as headache-inducing commissions

So, if you have no other choice, limit yourself to a minimum amount for your first expenses (such as a cab to your hotel).

  1. In a bureau de change

To get a good exchange rate, we recommend the well-known local exchange bureaus, such as :

  • "Al Ansari Exchange
  • "Al Fardan Exchange
  • Or "Al Rostamani Exchange".

These establishments can be found in the Dubai Mall or Mall of the Emirates, and generally offer very attractive rates.

  1. At a local bank

Some major banks, such asEmirates NBDandDubai Islamic Bank, also offer foreign exchange services. So, if you prefer to avoid exchange offices, this is a very good alternative.

Just be sure to check their opening times and any additional charges.

Is it necessary to have cash in Dubai?

Now that you know where to change euros in Dubai, let's talk about an often overlooked point: cash. Is it really essential in a city as modern as Dubai? Well, yes and no. It all depends on your habits and the situation.

When to use cash?

Even if bankcards and mobile payments are taking over from cash, there are times when cash remains unavoidable. This is the case, for example, if you decide to take a cab. Some drivers, especially those who don't have a presence on apps like Careem or Uberprefer to be paid in cash.

But that's not all: this also applies if you have to leave a tip. For example, when carrying luggage or eating out. Yes, you're not going to ask to leave a tip by credit card, that would be rather odd...

Or, another example, in the souks. Generally speaking, the latter don't always accept credit cards, which means you'll quickly get stuck if you don't have any cash on you.

How much do you need?

It's a difficult question, but the most important thing is to find the right balance. There's no point in carrying an astronomical sum. As a result, we recommend that you carry between AED 500 and AED 1,000 (€125 to €250) in cash. This will be more than enough to cover the expenses for which cash is necessary. After that, it's up to you!

How do you manage your cash?

There are several ways to manage your cash. Here are two of the main ones:

The first is to withdraw small amounts. For this, you can use cash dispensers. So you don't have to worry about withdrawing too much all at once.

The second is to keep your different currencies separate. The best way to do this is to have a wallet with several compartments. That way, you won't get lost when it's time to pay.
